Cash
The first clay of March saw the first distribution of cash made under the Bonus Act of last year. Checks were in the mail to veterans whose credit was for $50 or less and to dependents of dead veterans.
Just before the first cash went out, Major General Robert C. Davis went before the House Appropriations Committee to tell of the progress of the work:
P:Of 3,700,000 Army veterans entitled to bonuses under the law, 2, 400,000 had made applications; 2,200,000 applications had been approved and sent to the Veterans' Bureau for payment.
P: About 500,000 applications had been incomplete, and had been returned to the senders; 400,000 of this number had been corrected and returned, so that about 100,000 applications are out waiting correction and refiling.
P:Only 27,000 applications were made by persons ineligible to receive a bonus.
P:During the last two months, applications were received from veterans in 80 foreign countries, showing how widely our Army has scattered.
P:Nearly two-thirds of the veterans made their applications within the first eight months following the passage of the law; the peak, 32,000 a day, was reached last October.
P: Applications may be made until Jan. 1, 1928.
