Spartanburgher on Tour
The Rev. John Daniel Henderson, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, S. C. left on a year's leave of absence several months ago. In London last month he met an attractive man in the Regent's Park zoo. A clean-cut, serious young fellow he was, named O'Rourke.
It seemed that O'Rourke had just been left a legacy of -L-400,000. He had a typewritten letter to prove it. But there were conditions: -L-10,000 had to be given to the Pope and -L-50,000 more divided among worthy individuals. The Second Presbyterian church of Spartanburg, S. C. seemed a very worthy beneficiary. The Rev. Mr. Henderson put up -L-70 of his own money as evidence of good faith. So did another very solid-looking stranger by the name of John Clarke. O'Rourke, Mr. Clarke and the -L-70 all disappeared together. To his burning embarrassment the Rev. Mr. Henderson learned that he had been the victim of one of the most shopworn swindles in the world, known to the trade as "the Rosary Game."
Spartanburghers are resourceful. The Rev. Mr. Henderson pulled his hat down over his eyes, changed his overcoat, shaved off his mustache. Being thus, as he said, "disguised," Pastor Henderson took to haunting Regent's Park zoo. Last week he again met a charming young man who had just been left -L-400,000. His accomplice was nearby. They went to a teashop to talk things over. In the midst of tea O'Rourke (real name, Robert George) lost his appetite and began to run. Sprinting hard, the Rev. Mr. Henderson caught him three blocks away. Both crooks were jailed. Pastor Henderson continued his interesting and instructive trip around the world.
