New Mexico Finale
Last, week officials finished counting New Mexico ballots. Very gingerly they fingered the last few. The election for Senator was nearly a dead heat. All the early returns had shown Democratic Representative Dennis Chavez far in the lead.* Later votes began to pile up for Senator Bronson Cutting, insurgent Republican seeking reelection. With the last ballot officially counted, the vote stood: Cutting, 76,245; Chavez, 74,954.
*On the basis of these early returns TIME erroneously reported a Chavez victory (TIME, Nov. 12).
