Boss and Friend

To Manhattan's Polo Grounds for the opener last week went Jersey City Boss Frank Hague. As Giants and Phillies batted out the season's first ball, blandly grinning Boss Hague batted up his candidate for U. S. Senator from New Jersey, presented to the crowd the Honorable James H. R. Cromwell, coyly smiling. Said Mr. Cromwell (who hates to have his wife, Doris Duke, referred to as "the richest girl in the world"): "I stand with President Roosevelt in his ceaseless endeavor to find ... a better way of life for the great masses of our people." Next month he will resign his job as U. S. Minister to Canada.

Republican comment on the Cromwell candidacy, from Congressman Fred A. Hartley Jr. of New Jersey: "This should be encouraging news to the Democratic finance committee, but it should be equally pleasing to Senator Barbour [who will be Mr. Cromwell's rival in November]."
