"One Great Eternal Unit"

INTERNATIONAL "One Great Eternal Unit"

The late George ("Honest Jarge") Lansbury, who died last May at 81, was known and loved in every town of Britain. Son of a railway worker, he earned a modest fortune in the lumber business, retired, went into the labor movement, became the Labor Party's Parliamentary Leader. He was a passionate lover of peace--so single-minded that when his Party favored sanctions against Italy, he resigned and went back to the slums, where even in his late 703 he still lived.

War, when it came, broke his heart. Last week his will was published. True to life in preparing for death, George Lansbury's devise of his remains was an eloquent last word for peace. He directed that his body be cremated and the ashes thrown into the wind and sea off Lands End, and wrote:

"I desire this because although I love England very dearly and consider this lovely island the best spot in the world, I'm a convinced internationalist. I like to feel I'm just a tiny part of universal life which will one day break down all divisions of creed or speech and economic barriers and make mankind one great eternal unit both in life and death."
