A Luftwaffe captain who had been decorated by Adolf Hitler blabbed to a Swiss woman in Berlin. Last week, in a neutral capital, she blabbed to correspondents. The captain's view of Hitler and his headquarters:
On the appointed morning a blue Mercedes-Benz drove him to an airport hidden in a forest. Landing at a second airfield, he was driven to a third, from which a second airplane twisted him over to a fourth.
Near this field was his destination: 20 small, identical buildings surrounded by a high, barbed-wire fence and camouflaged with trees and bushes planted on their roofs. The captain was taken into one of the buildings and told to wait with four other heroes. The Fuehrer missed two appointments, kept his guests waiting all night and next morning. Finally:
"We are led to the Fuehrer's barrack, which looks exactly like all the others except for a big dog kennel outside. In this kennel Hitler keeps his pet, a beautiful big Alsatian shepherd dog. We enter a big room where on many tables maps are spread out. Half in darkness there is some human figure busying itself with a map. I don't notice this person as we all are anxiously awaiting entrance of the Fuehrer. Suddenly this person comes out of the dark corner and I don't believe my eyes! This must be the Fuehrer himself. I almost didn't recognize him at first. His face is becoming lined and his hair is greying, even growing white at certain spots. Only his eyes are still the same--radiating iron will and determination.
"Hitler hands us our decorations and invites us to be seated. Then he starts talking, at first spasmodically and fast, then quiet. He talks uninterruptedly for a whole hour. He talks about machines, Panzers and airplanes. He never once asks a personal question. After one hour we are all almost hypnotized. Then he ends abruptly, offers a short greeting to everyone and the audience is over. I return the same strenuous way by which I had come."
