Conventions

By firm and skillful pre-convention maneuvering, Connecticut's Governor John Davis Lodge last week steered the Republicans past several jagged rocks and anchored with a delegation to Chicago that contains 20 members officially committed to Eisenhower, two other members, officially uncommitted, who also favor Ike.

Biggest hazard was Lodge's feud with his former ally, National Committeeman William H. Brennan. Their dispute was over local issues, but Ike's friends feared Brennan might join the Taft minority, split the delegation. Lodge succeeded in displacing Brennan as national committeeman with former Governor James C. Shannon. Lodge then withdrew his opposition to William A. Purtell, a Hartford businessman, who was nominated for U.S. Senator. In an atmosphere of uneasy harmony, brought .about by these moves, the Ike slate of delegates was elected.

The Connecticut state convention completed selection of the six New England states' no Republican delegates. The final score: 92 committed to Eisenhower, 8 for Taft, 10 officially uncommitted.

Other Republican conventions: tj In Georgia, the "New Republicans," who were seated by the last two national conventions, elected one Taft and three Eisenhower delegates-at-large. Together with delegates previously elected at district conventions, that brought the totals to 13 for Ike, 2 for Taft, 1 for Warren, 1 uncommitted. The opposing Georgia G.O.P. faction chose 17 pro-Taft delegates a week earlier. The National Convention will have to decide between them.

P: In New Mexico, Taft did a little better than expected. He got 7 delegates, Eisenhower got 3, and 4 were uncommitted.

P: In Alabama, one Eisenhower and three Taft delegates-at-large were elected. Including district delegates previously chosen, that brought the final score to 9 for Taft, 4 for Ike, 1 uncommitted.

P: In, Virginia, the pro-Taft party machine was mildly buffeted, winning only two of four delegates-at-large; the other two were uncommitted. Together with delegates chosen earlier at district conventions, Taft now has 11, Ike 1, and 9 are uncommitted. Two remain to be, selected.

Among the Democrats:

P: In Tennessee, the full slate of 28 votes at Chicago was pledged to Native Son Estes Kefauver.

P: In Iowa, 24 uncommitted delegates were elected.

P: In Kentucky, all 26 of the state's Chicago votes were pledged to Native Son Alben Barkley.

P: In Minnesota, Senator Hubert Humphrey, a native son, added eight more convention votes to the 18 he won in the March 18 primary, giving him a sweep of the state.
