COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Any college football team that scores 48 points in a game ought to win. And down through the years, every team had--until Pittsburgh scored 48 two weeks ago against West Virginia. The game, as it turned out, wasn't even close: West Virginia won 63-48.

There have been lots of lower-scoring basketball games. West Virginia's quarterback Allen McCune performed in a few of them as an all-state high school basketball player. But now he gets a boot out of running the score up by firing bullets instead of baskets. Against Pitt, McCune completed 18 out of 25 passes for 320 yds., threw scoring tosses of 14, 15, 17, 59 and 72 yds. Sophomore Halfback Garrett Ford chipped in with TD runs of 5 yds. and 58 yds., while Pitt Coach John Michelosen moaned, "I've never seen so many perfect plays. They were going for the home run all the time."

So were Michelosen's Panthers. In all, 52 passes were thrown in the game, and the two teams gained a total of 1,071 yds. from scrimmage--just 16 short of the alltime collegiate record. Sighed Michelosen, "Just the fact that the defense is out there ordinarily would prevent anything like that." Ordinarily, yes--but not when the other team is West Virginia. Last week as the undefeated Mountaineers beat the Citadel, 25-2, their average in four games this season stood at 44.5 points per game.
