Elvis Has Left The Supermarket

By CHRISTOPHER JOHN FARLEY

It could prove to be the best thing to hit shopping since the "nine items or less" line. A supermarket in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, has acceded to customer demands that patrons shouldn't have to see the lurid covers of the Star and the National Enquirer if they don't want to. So it has banned those and other tabloids from one of its cashier lines (a sign reads TABLOID-FREE CHECKOUT LANE). If the innovation is a success, Harris Teeter, the chain that owns the supermarket, may establish tab-free zones in its 132 other stores.
